Facelift

November 11th, 2006 by CT in The Life, Web Update

Two updates to this blog:

1. (The obvious) it has undergone a facelift.  This was the previous layout.

Old layout

2. (The non-obvious) I’ve spun off a personal blog so those who couldn’t care less about my goings on will not be subject to vast amounts of wasted time.  I’ll leave that job to youtube.

Boys II Men

November 7th, 2006 by CT in The Life

Not too long ago I was an undergrad at Camp Trin Trin, enjoying waking up at 11am, oversized cheeseburgers and dorm parties.  During some of the homecomings, I got a chance to meet Black alumni and I was always like wow, they work, they have jobs.  So this past Saturday when I attended homecoming for the first time as an alumnus, it really hit me that I work, I have a job (in other words I’m getting old).

What eased this realization was that as I do get older, I can give more back, whether that be knowledge or financial support.  One of the current students I met during a alumni/student luncheon put on by the Black Alumni Organization, was interested in starting an Entrepreneurship Club on campus.  I was able to offer feedback and give her my card if she ever had questions or needed a guest speaker.  Without the knowledge I’ve acquired in the last couple years, I wouldn’t have been able to share that knowledge.  And sharing knowledge is almost as fun as acquiring it.  Maybe getting older isn’t as bad as they say.

Get and stay out of your comfort zone

September 2nd, 2006 by CT in Business, The Life

While thinking of what to write next in this blog, I looked over the previous post and thought what better than to rap about Rule #1 since that’s been ans probably always will be my hardest struggle.

Rule #1 I’ve seen or read many times and while it may be nothing new to you, it is one of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever come across.

When I first started my computer training business in ‘04 I knew that I would have to become more vocal and be “out there” as the business would not sell itself. I knew better than to believe “If you build it, they will come”.

If I were to become Mr. Businessman I would have to…network. The idea of talking to established business people was scary enough. And throw in that it wasn’t just talking, it was holding conversations. Saying I was insecure about the whole situation was an understatement. I wanted to stay in my secure, cozy, warm like a mother’s sweet embrace comfort zone.

Fortunately I realized that secure, cozy, warm like a mother’s sweet embrace comfort zone was not going to allow me to become Mr. Businessman. Decision time. (more…)

Advice from GoDaddy.com CEO

The following rules for survival is included with the permission of Bob Parsons (http://www.bobparsons.com) and is Copyright © 2004-2006 by Bob Parsons. All rights reserved.

Here are the 16 rules I try to live by:

1. Get and stay out of your comfort zone. I believe that not much happens of any significance when we’re in our comfort zone. I hear people say, “But I’m concerned about security.” My response to that is simple: “Security is for cadavers.”

2. Never give up. Almost nothing works the first time it’s attempted. Just because what you’re doing does not seem to be working, doesn’t mean it won’t work. It just means that it might not work the way you’re doing it. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it, and you wouldn’t have an opportunity.

3. When you’re ready to quit, you’re closer than you think. There’s an old Chinese saying that I just love, and I believe it is so true. It goes like this: “The temptation to quit will be greatest just before you are about to succeed.”

4. With regard to whatever worries you, not only accept the worst thing that could happen, but make it a point to quantify what the worst thing could be. Very seldom will the worst consequence be anywhere near as bad as a cloud of “undefined consequences.” My father would tell me early on, when I was struggling and losing my shirt trying to get Parsons Technology going, “Well, Robert, if it doesn’t work, they can’t eat you.”

5. Focus on what you want to have happen. Remember that old saying, “As you think, so shall you be.” (more…)
