5 Questions with Gwen Blackburn

November 18th, 2007 by CT in 5 Questions

A few months ago, I was a guest on Minority Point, an interview show about issues that impact the Greater Boston community of color. Produced and hosted by Gwen Blackburn, the show airs over WXKS/KISS 108 FM every Sunday morning at 7:30 AM, reaching around 90,000 listeners. Recently, I returned the favor and interviewed her.

BO: Did you create Minority Counterpoint or was it a pre-existing show?

GB: Previously it was known as “Black Family Experiences”, and then Sonny Joe White changed it to “Minority Counterpoint” when I came back to host the show. He also selected the theme music “Cash in Your Face” by Stevie Wonder.

BO: What makes you passionate about hosting the show?

GB: I make the decisions about whom I will interview, and what I will air. It is probably the longest continuously running program of a minority format in the Boston area. It makes it possible for the message minorities have to get out to the public.

BO: Who are some of the most memorable guests?

GB: Over the past 22 years, there have been many, but certainly Earl Graves of Black Enterprise would be one. There have been so very many people that it’s hard to say who was most memorable, because so many of them have been. I’ve had authors, religious leaders, politicians, educators, and people from almost all walks of life and professions.

BO: What advice do you have for young people of color thinking of a career in radio?

GB: Get involved in doing volunteer work at a station, as an intern or whatever they call them, and show your interest. This is how many young people have made it. It’s may be a long stint of volunteering, but if you’re serious about it, you will eventually find a slot. Training in broadcasting is also very helpful, but not a must.

BO: Anything else you would like to say to our readers?

GB: Yes, I produce and host this show for the people, yet they don’t always contact me to let me know what they’re doing or that they would like to do a show about something. I have a spot to give announcements, if they are sent to me. If I know about events coming up, I will announce them, if I get them in advance. I ask weekly to have people send me their comments and suggestions, and I mean it, but I very rarely get anything. They can write me at: KISS 108 - 10 Cabot Rd., Suite 302 - Medford 02155
